Dances
Cha cha - Sexy, sassy, and
very exciting, this dance is upbeat and a fun. Cha cha began as part of
the Mambo and became the rage of the early 1950s. Cha cha example songs:
Smooth - Santana, Sexy Back - Justin Timberlake, Low - Flo-Rider
Foxtrot - In 1913, Harry Fox, a vaudeville comedian, introduced a trot to
a ragtime song that pushed other trots to the background. It became
America’s most popular dance, and remains so to this day as the standard
of social dances. Most recognize the foxtrot as the playful yet elegant
trot made famous by Fred & Ginger. Foxtrot example songs: Fever - Michael Buble, Fly me to the Moon - Frank Sinatra, It had to be You - Harry
Connick Jr.
Hustle - Saturday Night Fever made the hustle very popular in the 1970s,
and we are still dancing it today! Although we’ve lost the gold chains and
polyester, the infectious spins, turns, and pretzel steps work to most any
up-tempo song, making it a practical dance to learn for your next cruise
or social event. Hustle example songs: I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor,
Believe - Cher, Last Dance - Donna Summer
Mambo -Combining American Jazz with the Afro-Cuban beat brought about the
Mambo. This dance was the predecessor to cha cha, salsa, and cumbia.
Arthur Murray Studios became famous for turning out some of the best Mambo
dancers of the era... Mambo example songs: Livin’ la Vida Loca - Ricky
Martin, Mambo #5 - Perez “Prez” Prado, Mambo Italiano - Dean Martin
Merengue - Considered “scandalous” when introduced to the United States in
1941, the merengue is a fun and easy dance to learn that will have your
hips moving in no time! Merengue example songs: Hot, Hot, Hot - Buster
Poindexter, Suavemente - Elvis Crespo, Jump in the Line - Harry Belafonte
Rumba - This sultry Latin dance will replace “the prom shuffle” with a
romantic hold, rhythmic body and hip movements, spins, and dips. This
dance is a must for romantic social dancing. Rumba example songs: Besame
Mucho - Xavier Cugat, It’s Now or Never - Elvis Presley, Under the
Boardwalk - The Drifters
Salsa -Certainly one of the most popular dances of our time, salsa clubs
can be found in any city in almost any country, and a good salsa dancer is
always in demand. Salsa example songs: Bembelequa - Celia Cruz, Picadillo
Puente - Tito Puente, I Swear - Marc Anthony
Samba - Known as the South American Waltz, the Samba pulsates to a unique
Latin rhythm. Carmen Miranda brought Samba from Brazil to America in the
1940s, and it is still popular today because it is easily adaptable to
different tempos. Samba example songs: Hey Mama - Black Eyed Peas,
Macarena - Los Del Rio, Mas Que Nada - Sergio Mendes
Swing & Jitterbug - The Swing is about as American as apple pie! Made
popular in the big-band era, this jumpin’, jivin’, spinnin’, kickin’ dance
can be found at weddings, clubs, blues bars, and the big screen. Movies
like Swing Kids and Swingers made swing dancing all the rage! Swing
example songs: Jump, Jive, An’ Wail - Louis Prima, Rock Around the Clock -
Bill Haley and the Comets, Hound Dog - Elvis Presley
Tango - Tango is known for it’s drama, passion, and excitement. Dips,
lunges, and a rose between the teeth characterize this dance that has
recently been featured in films such as Shall We Dance?, True Lies, and
Scent of a Woman. Tango example songs: Santa Maria - Gotan Project, Por
Una Cabeza - Carlos Gardel, “La Cumparsita - Gerardo Matos Robdriguez
Waltz - This classic dance brings grace, poise, and elegance to its
dancers. Known for sweeping and graceful movements, the waltz is a
wonderful choice for a bride and groom’s first dance, or for that
sophisticated black-tie affair. Waltz example songs: From my First Moment
- Charlotte Church, Open Arms - Journey, Moon River - Andy Williams
