Sailors' Valentines
The history of the Sailors’
Valentines goes back to the late 18th century when sailors would bring
home lovely octagonal boxes with seashell designs and present them to
their wives or sweethearts. Antique valentines from Barbados can fetch up
to $35,000 at auction and were made using up to 16 different shells. Today
this art form has been taken to a new level with a number of artists
creating wonderfully intricate designs, incorporating oil paintings and
using many different types of seashells and sea life.
About Us
Bev Bethell Dolezal, owner
of Bahama Bev’s, grew up in Nassau, Bahamas. From an early age Bev has
been fascinated by everything about seashells - their beauty, shape,
texture, etc. She is an avid collector with a healthy respect for the sea. Bev is a former president of the Suncoast Conchologists of Clearwater, FL,
and a member of the Conchologists of America.
She attends and exhibits in shell shows, loves to sail, snorkel and fish
and leads shelling trips to the Bahamas.
Bev is a professional photographer and has lived in Europe, Africa and the
United States. She lives in Clearwater, Florida with her husband, Ed and
has 3 adult children.
In May, 2008, Bev opened a seashells/nautical gift shop in Indian Rocks
Beach, Florida. The 700 sq. ft. shop has a variety of seashells, shell
art, sailors’ valentines, beachwear, photographs, nautical jewelry and an
exclusive line of SPF +50 sun protective clothing.

The women's line of sun protection clothing uses specially developed
fabrics that provide significantly more sun protection than regular
women's clothing and are individually tested for their UV protection
level. In addition, our sun protective clothes are designed to have unique
features to keep you cool while they provide maximum sun protection
coverage. Our UV protective clothing, also called SPF clothing or
sunscreen clothing, lets you enjoy being outside.
Women's Sun Hats
Our women's sun hats flatter and protect your face. They have wide brims
and come in a range of durable fabrics and colors. Most of our sun
protection hats are crushable for easy packing. To ensure complete
protection against reflected UV that can bounce up under the brim of your
sunblock hat, we also recommend using sunscreen or sunblock with your sun
hat, particularly on your chin and cheeks.

The sun protective swimwear is made from bright, highly chlorine-resistant
fabrics with matching accents. These designs, also called rash shirts or
rash guards, were originally developed for swimmers on Australia's Great
