About the City of Tampa

The City of Tampa is the largest city in Hillsborough County, is the county seat and is the third most populous city in Florida. It is located on the west coast of Florida, approximately 200 miles northwest of Miami, 180 southwest of Jacksonville, and 20 miles northeast of St. Petersburg. The population of the city represents approximately one-third of the total population of Hillsborough County. Tampa's economy is founded on a diverse base that includes tourism, agriculture, construction, finance, health care, government, technology, and the port of Tampa. Contributing to the success of our community is the way businesses, City government, and citizens work together to make Tampa a better place to live. [source]

Tampa National Historic Landmarks

El Centro Espanol De Tampa
An impressive example of Spanish, Moorish and French Renaissance- influenced architecture, this massive masonry building dramatically illustrates the role of ethnic social and mutual assistance organizations in the daily life of immigrant populations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. [source]

Tampa Bay Hotel

The hotel was a pioneer effort in the Florida resort business, and is an excellent example of Moorish-Turkish Revival architecture. The Landmark received a Save America's Treasures matching grant of $400,000 in 2002. [source]

Ybor City Historic District
Founded in 1886, Ybor City is significant in Spanish- and Cuban-American immigration history. The district is also of importance in American industrial history, for it contains the largest collection of buildings related to the cigar industry in America and probably the world. In addition to factories, the district's buildings include workers' housing; the ethnic clubs organized by Ybor City's immigrants, who included Italians and Germans as well as Cubans and Spaniards; and the commercial buildings that served the community. Most buildings date to the first two decades of the 20th century. Historically, Ybor City was a rare multi-ethnic and multi-racial industrial community in the Deep South and it is highly illustrative of manifold aspects of the history of ethnic and race relations.
